durability

Lead sheet has proven itself for centuries as a very durable material.

From lead to lead

Despite all the innovations in construction, the old familiar lead turns out to be a very environmentally friendly building material. That is the outcome of TNO (the Netherlands Organisation for applied scientific research) research into the environmental effects of lead in construction. In particular, the sustainability and the high degree to which lead can be reused (lead is 100% recyclable time after time) contribute to the good environmental performance. These results unnerve the persistent misconception that lead is worse for the environment than alternatives. The opposite turns out to be true.

TNO conducted various studies into the environmental effects of lead in construction. For example, it was investigated what the consequences are of so-called ‘run-off’ in the case of lead that has been exposed to the outside air. “The study shows that there is no risk to the environment” Even if roofs of buildings are disconnected from the sewer system and the runoff water ends up directly in the environment, there is no environmental risk, according to the conclusions of TNO.

The study also measured the environmental effects of various lead alloys. This shows that the run-off can be three to four times lower when a lead alloy containing 0.05% copper or 0.1% tin is used.

In its more than 100 years of existence, Uzimet has always been concerned with themes such as health, safety and sustainability. In recent years we have learned more about how lead can be used and processed safely with limited risks to health and environment. We consider it important and pursue these themes for both our employees and the users of lead.

Lead sheet is a sustainable building material that requires little maintenance and has a low environmental impact. A number of guidelines must be followed in order to limit any consequences for health and safety to a minimum.

To achieve this, Uzimet has embraced the “Industry Voluntary Product Stewardship Code of Practice”. This code of conduct aims to ensure that health, safety and environmental aspects of our products are resposibly managed throughout their entire life cycle.

During use and at the end of its lifecycle, lead sheet presents little health risk. However, there are important health and safety rules that protect workers while installing lead sheet products.
When there is an exposure risk, the correct work methods and protective equipment must be known to tusers and available before work starts.
The ELSIA Safety Guide for the Plumber provides simple, easy-to-implement steps on how to work safely and healthily with sheet lead.
Further information on how to work safely with lead sheet in construction can be found in ane-book developed by the UK Lead Sheet Association (LSA) and the UK Health & Safety Executive.

Uzimet considers corporate social responsibility very important. It has traditionally been intertwined with our economic activities (profit). For us, recycling lead automatically means taking people (people) and the environment (planet) into account. For example, we produce in an occupational health and safety environment. But at the same time we meet strict environmental requirements and we have had the environmental impact of lead researched by TNO.

Since 2012 we have a representative booth presentation at ICDuBo.

ICDuBo is the largest and most inspiring center for sustainable building in the Netherlands. With more than 250 participating parties, ICDuBo forms an active community that connects all parties involved in sustainable (re)development and management of real estate: from client to supplier and from government to consumer.

In the inspirational showroomspace of 2500 m2, which is open daily and accessible to everyone, leaders in the construction industry show their innovative products, concepts and solutions.

Health & Safety

While working with lead, proper precautions are advised. Lead can be harmful to your health when not properly handled with. Use a mask and gloves whenever you handle lead.

Collection

Ensure that lead waste is kept separate from other materials ready for collection. Lead dust needs to be removed by industrial vacuumcleaner and stored in a closed compartment.

Transportation

Scrap lead should not be transported in open vehicles and the vehicles should be thoroughly cleaned after transport.

Lead Matters

Thanks to a unique combination of properties and process characteristics, lead is the only suitable material in many industrial, medical and construction applications. The unique recyclable material plays an essential role for EU society and its economy. Lead Matters is a campaign that captures this essence, developed by Lead REACH Consortium PbRC; an initiative managed by the International Lead Association ILA.
